A retired tech told me to use lighter fluid on sticky shutters, I laughed until it worked

Last month a guy who used to fix Canons in the 80s watched me struggle with a jammed shutter on a beat-up AE-1 and said to dab lighter fluid on the blades. I thought he was messing with me, but after two failed attempts with contact cleaner, I tried it and the thing freed up in about ten minutes. Do any of you use weird old solvents like that, or do you stick to modern stuff for stuck mechanisms?
