Vent: new guys keep drilling pilot holes too small for 1/4 inch coax staples
I trained a new helper last Tuesday in Sacramento and watched him split three staples in a row because he drilled 1/8 inch pilot holes into old fir trim. The staples want a hole slightly bigger than the staple itself, so 3/16 works for the 1/4 inch ones we run on exterior runs. I know this because I spent my first two summers in this trade patching split wood with wood filler, and my old lead guy finally showed me his drill index after my fourth callback. It matters because every split staple is a water path into a customer's wall, and rot shows up 6 months later on the sill plate. We started writing the bit size on the staple box with a Sharpie and nobody has split one since. What bit size are you all running on vinyl siding, because 3/16 still feels tight on the cold days up here?
