That $250 toner probe I swore was overkill just saved my butt on a messy job
I dropped $250 on a Fluke toner probe last year thinking it was way too much for basic tracing, but yesterday on a tangled run in an old office building it found a live line buried under three layers of drywall patch. The cheap one I used before would have taken me all afternoon (if it worked at all). Anybody else find that spending more on a tester actually cuts your labor time way down?

Oh man, nothing like a $250 reality check to remind you that cheap tools exist just to teach you patience. I bet that Fluke paid for itself in the five minutes it took to find that line. Now you can frame the drywall patch as a souvenir of your newfound fiscal responsibility.

Actually, there's a hidden tax on cheap tools nobody talks about - the time you waste second-guessing yourself. When that Harbor Freight multimeter gives you a flaky reading, you don't trust it, so you recheck everything three times. That eats hours. The Fluke cuts all that out. Plus, you can sell a quality meter for 70% of what you paid if you quit the trade. Cheap stuff goes straight in the trash or sits in a drawer for ten years before you finally throw it out. That $250 is really just a deposit on your sanity.
