Shoutout to the old tone and probe, my meter does it all now but I still miss the squeal
When I started in 2004 we traced every wall drop with a tone generator and an inductive probe. You clipped the leads on, waved that wand around until you heard the warble, and marked the drywall with a pencil. Now I clamp an all in one tester on the coax, hit a button, and the remote unit lights up green from two rooms away. Last week I found a buried splitter behind a panel in about 90 seconds, which would have taken me 20 minutes of crawling back in the day. The trade off is my ears got lazy and I trust the screen more than I should. Anybody else keep an old probe in the van just in case the fancy meter dies on a Friday afternoon?
