My old boss in Phoenix made us use a knife and tape for every coax end, no exceptions.

I did that for three years, thinking it was the only way to get a good seal. Switched to a compression tool after moving companies, and my callbacks for water damage dropped by half in the first six months. The old method just couldn't handle the summer monsoon rains. Anyone else have a tool change that fixed a constant problem?

We had the same exact problem in Tucson with those summer storms. My old foreman insisted on the knife and tape method, said it built character. I finally bought my own compression tool after the third flooded box in a month. The difference was night and day, like you said. It just seals so much tighter against the housing. I still see guys using the old way and wonder how they deal with the callbacks.

Ever try the gel-filled connectors? They're a bit more upfront but saved my bacon on a few outdoor runs.
