Can we talk about how tone testing used to be a whole ordeal?
I remember starting out back in 2003 and carrying around that massive tone generator kit with the alligator clips, the one that weighed like five pounds and needed its own pouch. If you had a bad ground or a wet splice, you'd spend an hour chasing a weak signal that faded in and out, trying to figure out if it was the wire or the tool itself. Now I just press a button on my little pocket toner and it reads through insulation like magic, no guesswork at all. But sometimes I think we lost something, because that slow process forced you to actually trace every foot of cable and notice potential trouble spots before they became service calls. I did a job in a crawl space yesterday near Springfield and finished in 20 minutes what would have taken me half a day back then. Does anyone else ever feel like the troubleshooting muscle gets weaker when the tech does all the heavy lifting, or am I just romanticizing the old grind?
