Why did a simple drawer pull layout take me 5 hours yesterday?

I was installing 12 pulls on a custom maple dresser for a client in Portland, and somehow I spent 5 hours measuring, drilling, and re-drilling because my template slipped twice. I finally used a scrap board clamped with stops at each end, which fixed it instantly. Has anyone else had a simple job spiral like that, or am I just losing my mind lol?

Have you ever had a moment where you realize you've been fighting the project instead of the problem, and the fix is so obvious you almost laugh? I spent a whole afternoon once trying to line up cabinet hinges with a laser level before giving up and just using a piece of painter's tape as a guide.
