Tried an antique handplane on a maple drawer front

Picked up a beat up Stanley #4 at an estate sale for $10. Took it apart, flattened the sole, sharpened the iron for 45 minutes until it shaved hair. First pass cut so smooth I didn't even need sandpaper. Anyone else ditch the sanders for old steel sometimes?

Just saw a video where a guy said the #4 is for smoothing, not hogging off wood.

The #4 is a smoother, so it's really for final smoothing, not heavy material removal. You probably want a #5 or #6 jack plane for flattening a drawer front like that.
