The difference a 3/4 inch reveal makes on a kitchen island

I built two islands for the same client, one in 2021 and a new one last month. The old one had flush cabinet doors, but the new design used a 3/4 inch reveal around the whole piece. That small gap changed the whole look from heavy and blocky to light and modern. The client said it felt like a custom piece from a high end magazine. What's the smallest design change you've made that had the biggest visual impact?

Oh man, that reveal trick is everything. Did a similar thing with some built-in shelves last year, just swapped out the plain white shelves for ones with a tiny rounded edge. Went from looking like cheap boxes to something way more finished and expensive. It's wild how those tiny details trick your brain. Your client is totally right, that's the kind of stuff that makes a place feel custom.

Gotta disagree on the rounded edges thing. That little curve can actually make shelves look cheaper, like builder-grade stuff from a big box store. A sharp, clean edge reads as more custom and intentional to me. It's the difference between a mass-produced table and a real piece of furniture. Those crisp lines just feel more solid and designed.
