The 78 year old guy at the lumber yard told me to stop sanding to 220 and I've been thinking about it all week
I was picking up a sheet of maple ply last Tuesday at a yard over in Aurora and got talking to this old timer named Walt who's been building cabinets since 1971. He asked what grit I finish at and when I said 220 he just shook his head and said anything past 150 is wasted effort on a film finish since the first coat fills the scratches anyway. I've been sanding to 220 on every face frame and door for 12 years because that's just what you do. Figured I'd test it on a set of oak shop cabinets and honestly I can't see a difference after three coats of poly, and it saved me almost two hours. Now I'm second guessing my whole finishing routine. Anyone else cut off at 150 or is Walt just old and set in his ways?
