The 3 a.m. kitchen reno in Columbus that sold me on soft-close hinges

I was helping a buddy swap out his landlord's particleboard cabinets at 3 a.m. because his tenant moved out early, and those cheap knock-off hinges kept slamming shut every time we set one down. We grabbed a pack of Blum soft-close hinges from the local big box, and within 10 minutes the difference in feel was night and day, even on the same crappy doors. Has anyone else found that paying for better hardware on a rental flip is worth it, or does the client never notice?

The tenant will totally notice even if they don't say anything. Nobody wakes up and goes "wow, my hinges are smooth today" but they'll sure as heck notice when a cabinet door slams at 6 a.m. and wakes up the whole place. I did a flip last year with cheap hinges on the upper cabinets and the new owner mentioned the slamming within a week. Swapped them all out for soft-close and that was the last complaint I heard. Better hardware on the stuff people touch every single day is always worth the extra few bucks, especially when it saves you a callback later.
