Switched from plywood to MDF for paint grade, no regrets after 40 doors
Used to be all plywood, all the time. Thought MDF was for cheap builders. Then a job in Austin needed 40 painted shaker doors and the customer wanted zero grain bleed through. Tried one door in MDF just to test. Sanded smoother, painted flatter, no ghost lines. Corners stayed crisp too. The plywood ones kept showing telegraphing after a month. Swapped the whole order. Heavier to move around the shop but worth it. Has anyone else made the switch and gone back?

My uncle ran a cabinet shop for 30 years and he swore plywood was the only way until he did a big hotel job in 2019. The MDF doors held up so much better in the humid rooms near the pool that he tossed all his plywood stock. It's funny how that works, the stuff you look down on ends up being the right tool. Same thing happened with my buddy who switched from corded to battery tools, fought it for years then never looked back. Most of us just get stuck in a habit until a big job forces us to see it different.
