Rant: my old shop lead told me to stop sanding past 180 grit on painted cabinets, and he was dead right

I spent 2 hours extra on a maple face frame down to 320 last month and the paint still showed every swirl when the light hit it at the customers place in Dayton. He always said paint needs a scratch to bite, not a polish. Anyone else get better finish results stopping at 180?
