Overheard a guy at the lumberyard trash talking CNC joinery
He said hand-cut dovetails are the only "real" cabinetwork and CNC stuff is for hobbyists. I've been running CNC for 8 years and my domino joints are dead on every time, but I also hand-fit the drawer fronts. That attitude ignores that most clients just want it square and on time. Has anyone else had to justify CNC work to old school guys, or do you just let the work speak?

Did the guy actually offer to pay the difference in shop time for hand-cut dovetails, or was that just free advice from the peanut gallery? I mean, hand-cut is great if you charge triple and have a week to burn, but the lumberyard crowd usually stops talking when you show them a tight domino joint that took 90 seconds. Most of my clients would laugh if I billed them for six hours of chiseling when the machine does it in six minutes, square and strong. So what does he do when a customer wants twelve drawers, all identical, and the deadline is Friday?
