Old cabinetmaker told me to soak my router bits in kerosene overnight

I took his advice (since he had 40 years in the trade) and woke up to the kerosene eating through the plastic router bit case and ruining the bearings. Ended up having to replace 3 bits at $35 each. Anyone else get bad advice from someone who seemed like they knew their stuff?

Ask him why he didn't warn you about the plastic.

Kerosene on plastic is pretty much a known disaster waiting to happen, right? I mean sure the guy had 40 years but maybe he was using metal cases or something. Old timers forget not everyone has the same setup. $35 per bit stings but honestly that's a cheap lesson compared to what some folks learn. Plenty of people get way worse advice that costs them way more money or time.
