My go-to finish came from a chance meeting with another cabinetmaker.
I ran into an older woodworker at a local meet and he shared his finish recipe. He mixes boiled linseed oil with mineral spirits and polyurethane for a wipe-on finish. I tested it on some scrap oak, and the result was a smooth, tough coat. Now I use it on everything from cabinets to tables.

Love seeing how the best tricks come from just talking to people who've been doing things forever. Notice it everywhere now, like the old guy at the hardware store who knows exactly which glue to use or a neighbor with the perfect garden tip. We're surrounded by all this quiet know-how (stuff you'd never find in a manual) just waiting to be passed on if someone asks. Makes you wonder what else we're missing by not striking up more conversations.

Read something about that, stuff you can't really write down.

Get that all the time. It's like every trade or hobby has its own secret handshake, learned only from years of doing. See it everywhere, from kitchens to workshops.
