I finally got why my drawer fronts always felt a little off

I was having coffee with a guy who does museum restoration work, and he asked me how I set my reveal gaps. I told him I just eye it with a nickel for spacing, like my old boss taught me. He said, 'Forget the coin, try a playing card. It's 0.010 inches thinner and your eye will see the difference even if your tape won't.' I tried it on a vanity I'm building, and man, he was right. That tiny change made the whole piece look way more crisp and even. Has anyone else found a simple trick that fixed a long-standing habit?

My uncle is a cabinet maker. He uses a business card for spacing, says it's the perfect thickness. That extra bit of precision matters even on normal furniture.

That nickel trick works fine for real world builds. Chasing museum-grade perfection on a vanity seems like overkill.
