Hey, listen up about dust collection before it's too late

Was talking to a retired guy at the lumber yard in Columbus last Saturday and he said something that hit me hard: 'Every cabinet you build is putting dust in your lungs, you just don't feel it yet.' He showed me his old respirator, filters black as coal, and told me he's been coughing for 3 years since he stopped wearing them regular. I always thought my shop vac setup with that cheap cyclone was enough, but he pointed out the fine stuff still floats everywhere. Has anyone else dealt with health issues from dust, or switched to a real system that actually catches the fines?

I talked to my doctor about the same thing after a bad sinus infection last winter, and he told me the fines are the ones that get you, not the sawdust you can see. I built a downdraft table for sanding and it made a huge difference, but the floaters still hung around until I added a proper bag filter. You can't smell it or see it most days, but that black filter he showed you is exactly what mine looked like, and that's enough proof for me.
