Apprentice's tape measure trick still blows my mind

Had a kid working with me on a job in Tulsa, maybe 19 years old, and he watched me struggle marking out a tricky dovetail jig setup. He reached over, grabbed my tape, and showed me this thing where you use the housing as a reference point instead of the hook. Calculated the offset in his head, marked it spot on, and I've been doing it his way for 2 months now. It was one of those moments where you realize the young folks watch different videos than we did. Anyone else ever picked up a better method from a green helper? How do you handle a new guy who's actually teaching you stuff?
