Our warehouse inventory system kept double counting until we switched to barcode scanning

We had 15% discrepancy in our stock counts for 4 months straight here in Phoenix, and I thought it was just employee error. Turns out the manual entry system we were using was causing the same item to be scanned twice on different spreadsheets. Has anyone else dealt with inventory software that just couldn't keep up with actual operations?

Right, like @drew_chen said, it was a software problem that just looked like barcodes were the issue for a while. The system basically said "sure, scan that box again on this other sheet, we don't care." I guess we were just lucky the discrepancy was only 15 percent and not 50.

Whoa hold on, you're saying the manual entry system let you scan the same item twice on different spreadsheets? That's not really how manual entry works. If you're typing numbers into a spreadsheet by hand, there's no barcode scanning involved at all. Sounds like you had a hybrid setup where someone was using a scanner but the software wasn't checking for duplicates across files. That's a software problem, not a barcode problem. Barcodes themselves don't cause double counting unless the system is built wrong.
