Our bookkeeper hit $11,400 in unpaid invoices last Tuesday and I thought she was joking
I run a three truck landscaping outfit out of Grand Rapids and I do the books myself because I figured we were too small to need help. Last Tuesday our part time bookkeeper pulled a report and told me we had $11,400 sitting in unpaid invoices, some of it going back 94 days. I honestly laughed because I thought she had a filter set wrong. Turns out I had been marking plenty of jobs as done without ever checking if the check actually showed up, and two of those were fall cleanup jobs from November that nobody followed up on. The part that got me is I had been stressing about cash flow for weeks and telling my wife we needed to cut the crew hours, when the money was already out there. We spent Wednesday morning just calling people and most of them paid on the spot because they had plain forgot too. Now I have her run that aging report every Monday and I actually read it. What does everyone else use to keep from letting receivables quietly pile up like that?
