I stopped doing free estimates for big commercial jobs and my close rate went up
I run a small pressure washing outfit and for 2 years I gave free estimates on everything, including big commercial bids where I'd drive an hour out to some warehouse in Modesto just to look at a parking lot. Last spring I started charging $50 for commercial quotes, and I'd knock it off the bill if they booked. Figured I'd lose half my leads. Instead my close rate jumped from about 3 in 10 to 7 in 10, and the tire kickers vanished overnight. Turns out when people pay even a small fee to hear your number, they're actually ready to buy. I think the free part was attracting folks who just wanted to compare 5 bids and never pull the trigger. Anyone else charge for estimates on bigger jobs? Curious if the $50 is too low for commercial work that size.
