A vendor in Toledo told me my 14 person shop runs better on paper than his software
I was at a trade show in Toledo last month and got talking to a guy selling inventory software, and when I told him we still track most jobs on a whiteboard he laughed and said his own shop of 14 people ran on paper for 6 years because the software got in the way. He said switching too early cost him $9k in training and lost time before they even knew what their real workflow was. I keep thinking about that because we were about to drop money on a system, and now I'm wondering if we're fixing a problem we don't have yet. How do you know when it's actually time to move off paper and not just when a sales guy says so?
