A client's throwaway line about my invoice layout saved me 4 hours every month
They just said 'I can barely read where the labor ends and materials start' and after I regrouped the columns and shaded the subtotals, my monthly billing time in Dayton went from 6 hours down to 2, anyone else had a small comment like that fix a big bottleneck?
Oh sure, one little offhand comment from a client and suddenly you're a billing genius, meanwhile the rest of us are out here formatting invoices like it's 2009 and wondering why our whole Sunday disappears. I had a guy once say "why does the tax line look like a ransom note" and I laughed it off for six months before I finally just bolded the dang thing and stopped getting five emails a week asking me to explain it. We really do get blind to our own mess, huh. Four hours a month is basically a free afternoon, so I'd say that client earned themselves a coffee or at least a thank you card. Sometimes the dumbest sounding feedback is the stuff that actually pays off.
