Took me 3 months to realize I was numbering my index wrong

I kept getting frustrated when I'd flip to my index and the page numbers didn't match where I actually wrote things. Turns out I was numbering pages before I even started the month and then adding collections in between. After 3 months of chaos I finally started leaving my index blank and only filling it in as I go. Has anyone else dealt with index numbers never lining up?

Have you seen the common tip about pre-numbering your pages before anything else? I read somewhere that numbering pages first helps avoid this mess. But honestly, I tried that and it still messed me up because I'd accidentally skip a section and have to redo everything. I switched to using a pencil for my index numbers and just erase and replace as I go. It's not perfect but it works better than starting over.
