Six months of journaling before I realized my index was useless

I started a bullet journal in January and dutifully logged every page in the index, but I never actually looked at it, I just flipped through the whole book to find old entries. Last Tuesday I spent 20 minutes hunting for a grocery list from March, and then it hit me that the index only had page numbers, not topics, so I was reading a list of numbers that meant nothing. Anyone else accidentally build a system that looks organized but fails the one time you need it?
