Just realized my cheap gel pens were sabotaging my layouts, then I bought one fancy one and now I'm torn

For like 8 months I used a 12 pack of dollar store pens for my weekly spreads. Thought the smudging and skipping were just how it goes. Then my sister left a nicer pen at my place in Portland, a single one, and my last 2 weeklies came out way cleaner. Now I'm wondering if I need to drop $20 plus on a full set, or keep my cheap ones and just deal with it. Is the fancy pen difference actually worth it for daily use, or was it just a one time fluke for me? Has anyone else gone back to cheap pens after trying a nice one?

the "smudging and skipping were just how it goes" part hit me hard bc same. i wasted so many spreads on those scratchy dollar store ones thinking i just had bad handwriting. honestly one good pen changed my whole vibe too, but i get the price shock. maybe get like a two pack of a midrange brand instead of a full set, that way you can swap it out when you're doing a messy brain dump without feeling guilty.
