Watched a guy at the Kroger on Elm scan every single item with the app and he saved $23 while I stood there

I was behind this dude in line at the Kroger on Elm Street and he pulled out his phone and scanned every item in his cart one by one before checking out. Took him like 4 extra minutes and I was getting annoyed, but then the total dropped from $87 to $64. I asked him what app it was and he said it was just the store's own rewards thing plus some cash back app he uses. I've been paying full price this whole time like a sucker. Does anyone actually do this or is it not worth the hassle?
