Warning: I spent $400 on a fancy budgeting app subscription and it was a total waste

I got convinced by all the ads and reviews that I needed this premium app to get my finances right. It had all these charts and projections, and I signed up for the yearly plan at $400 thinking it would magically fix my spending. After six months, I realized I was just logging numbers into a pretty screen without actually changing any habits. The app kept suggesting I cut my grocery budget by like 80%, which is impossible where I live in Phoenix. I finally canceled it and just went back to my old notebook method, and my savings are better now because I'm actually paying attention. Has anyone else fallen for a tool that promised to fix everything but just made it more complicated?

Yeah, a free spreadsheet did more for me than any app.

What kind of stuff were you tracking in the spreadsheet? I mean, I tried one for budgeting once but it got messy fast. Maybe it's just me but I'd love to know how you set yours up to actually stick with it.
