Tried a cash envelope system and it backfired hard

I was at the grocery store last Tuesday, grabbed my envelope for food, and realized I left it on the kitchen counter. Had to leave my cart and walk out because I didn't have my card on me either. That moment made me rethink the whole cash only approach. Now I do a hybrid thing where I keep cash for fun stuff but use a debit card for bills and groceries. Has anyone else had a system fail at the worst possible time?

Debit cards can still overdraft you if the merchant runs it as credit.

Doesn't it feel like every piece of modern convenience has some hidden catch? It's like the world is set up to nickel-and-dime you if you're not constantly paying attention. I've noticed this with everything from app subscriptions that auto-renew (and forget to tell you) to those "free" trials that need your card info. Same with store loyalty cards that track everything you buy. You just can't trust that something is straightforward anymore, you have to read the fine print every single time.
