That time at the farmer's market changed how I meal plan...
I was at the local farmer's market last spring and saw a lady with her grandkids buying a huge bag of bruised apples for like $3. She told me she bakes them into pies and freezes them for months. That conversation stuck with me, so I started checking the discount produce bins at my grocery store more often. Now I grab whatever's about to go bad and cook it up on Sunday afternoons... it's saved me probably $40 a month. Has anyone else found a random tip from a stranger that totally turned your food budget around?

Wait did you see the look on that lady's face when she was talking about those pies? I had a similar thing happen with a guy at the dumpster behind a bakery once. He showed me how they toss day old bread every morning and I started grabbing loaves to freeze for toast and croutons. Now I check the marked down bread rack at my grocery store every visit and snag bags of bagels for like 99 cents. Its not always about the cheapest option, its about what you're actually gonna use before it goes bad again.

Honestly I think the "buy bruised fruit to save money" thing is overrated. A lot of times those discount bins have produce that's already rotting inside, so you end up tossing half of it and wasting your time. Cooking everything on Sunday sounds like a chore that adds stress to your weekend for maybe $10 in savings.
