Showerthought: That "cheaper rent" in the burbs might be costing you triple
I was reading a post from a guy who moved 45 minutes out to save $300 a month on rent, but then he did the math on gas, tolls, and car maintenance and realized he was actually losing $150 a month. It made me stop and think about all those hidden costs we ignore when we think we're getting a deal. Has anyone else here run the numbers on a big move or choice and found out the "savings" were fake?

Wait, have any of you ever seen a friend do that exact thing but somehow still argue it was a good idea? Because my buddy Jake moved 40 minutes out from the city to save like $200 on rent, but then his car broke down twice in six months and he started buying coffee every day since there's no good shop near his place. I did the rough math with him one night and he was paying almost $400 more a month than his old studio. He still insists he's "living the dream" though, just with a longer commute and less money in his pocket.
