My water heater gave out last night and I didn't panic about the cost

Came home yesterday to a puddle in the basement. The old 40 gallon tank finally rusted through after 12 years. Instead of stressing, I called three plumbers this morning and got quotes. Found one who'd install a basic electric model for $950 out the door. I've been putting $40 a month into a home repair fund for the last year and a half. Had about $1100 saved up so it covered the whole thing plus the floor dry. Anyone else keep a sinking fund for stuff like this?

Question if $950 is really worth a full year and a half of saving or if it's more about wanting validation for it.

Wait, is that $950 after or before tax? I saved up like $800 once for a used mountain bike my buddy swore was "barely ridden," then found out the frame was cracked three weeks later. Kinda makes you wonder if the validation is from having the thing or from the story of saving up for it, you know?
