My brother said to ignore the 50/30/20 rule. He was right.
I was dead set on that 50/30/20 budget. Foods, rent, fun. But I live in Phoenix and rent eats up 60% easy. My brother told me to just track every dollar for 2 months instead. Did it. Saw I was dropping $200 on coffee and takeout alone. Now I put a hard $100 cap on eating out. Way better than some fake rule that doesn't fit my life. Anyone else ditch the standard advice and make their own system?

Damn, TWO HUNDRED bucks on coffee and takeout? That's INSANE. I don't mean to sound harsh but that's like a car payment right there. I feel you though, those little things add up SO fast you don't even realize it. Good on your brother for telling you to actually look at the numbers instead of following some cookie cutter plan. Most people just parrot that 50/30/20 thing without thinking about rent being 60% in some cities. It's NOT a one size fits all deal. Glad you found what works for you, man.

Eh, I get what you're saying but two hundred bucks on coffee and takeout really isn't that bad for a single person in a city. That's like $7 a day and some weeks I spend more on dog treats for my shop than that. It's not a car payment unless you're driving a real beater.
