Appreciation post: the envelope system finally made sense to me after I tried it with just $40
I always thought the cash envelope thing was for people who couldn't control a debit card, and honestly I figured I was way past that. My problem was I kept blowing through my fun money by the 10th of every month and then feeling guilty for two weeks. So about six weeks ago I pulled $40 in fives and singles out of the bank on a Friday and put it in a plain white envelope labeled "whatever I want." That's it. No app, no spreadsheet, no color coded tabs. The weird part is when the envelope got thin around the 22nd I just stopped spending instead of swiping, and it didn't even feel like a punishment. I ate lunch at my desk three days that week, which I never do, and by the 30th I still had $11 left over. I think seeing the actual paper getting low did something a balance on a screen never could for me. Curious if anyone else here has tried a super small version like this, or if you went all in on envelopes for every category right away?
40 bucks in fives is exactly how I started too. Mine was a $50 bill I broke at the gas station so I'd have small ones, and watching that stack shrink hit different than staring at my banking app. Went full envelopes for groceries after that and never looked back.
