PSA: hung my projector screen from $9 of closet rod brackets and a dowel, and it survived my nephew's birthday party
My basement ceiling is that old drop tile stuff from the 70s, so I could not drill into a joist no matter where I aimed, and the stud finder kept chirping at nothing. I got quoted $180 just for a ceiling mount install at a shop over in Garfield, which was more than I paid for the used projector itself. So I grabbed two closet rod brackets and a wooden dowel from the hardware store for about 9 bucks total and ran the dowel through the screen's top grommets to hang it. I figured it would sag or rip out within a week, honestly. That was four months ago and it is still dead level. Last month my nephew had his 9th birthday down there with like 11 kids bouncing off the walls and the screen never moved once. My brother in law poked at it and goes "that is held up by a stick?" and I just shrugged. Anyone else hanging a screen in a drop ceiling without tearing the whole thing out?

Used to figure a real mount was the only safe way, but your stick setup clearly proved me wrong.

Same here man, I was all about those fancy mounts until I tried the stick method last season. Set it up in my garage first just to mess around and honestly it held up better than the $80 mount I had before. Took me a few tries to get the angle right but once it clicked, game changer. @kaiharris knows what's up, sometimes the simple stuff just works. Saved me a ton of cash too, which never hurts.
