My speaker wire was upside down for 3 YEARS and I never knew

I got a hand-me-down receiver from my uncle in Tucson and just twisted the red and black wires however they fit. Last week my buddy came over, looked at my rear channels, and said "you know those are reversed on both sides, right?" I argued with him until he swapped them and suddenly the soundstage actually made sense. I spent all that time blaming my cheap speakers when it was just me being sloppy. How many of you actually check polarity on budget builds, or do you just trust the color coding too?
