My projector mount gave out during a movie night, what a mess

Last Saturday, 20 minutes into Dune, the whole bracket pulled out of the drywall ceiling. The projector dropped about 3 feet before the safety cable caught it. The drywall anchor was one of those cheap plastic ones from the hardware store, rated for 50 pounds, but the projector is 14 pounds. Apparently the plaster around it was crumbly from a leak two years ago. I ended up cutting a square of drywall out, screwing a 2x4 across two joists, and patching it. Total cost was about 12 bucks for the wood and joint compound. Took me 3 hours and a lot of swearing. Has anyone else had a mount fail on them? What did you use to reinforce it that actually held?

That plastic anchor was the real problem, not just the plaster. A 50 pound rated anchor in crumbly drywall is basically a wish and a prayer, so honestly you got lucky the safety cable was there.
