I finally stopped wiring speakers in series after blowing out my 6th receiver
Was running 4 speakers off a $30 pawn shop receiver for like 2 years. Kept thinking I was just getting unlucky with used gear. Then a guy at the electronics recycling place told me I was dropping the impedance way too low and cooking the amp. Grabbed a cheap 8 ohm speaker selector switch for $15 and my current receiver has been running fine for 10 months now. Anyone else learn the hard way that more speakers doesnt mean louder?

Oh man, "more speakers doesnt mean louder" is the lesson I learned the hard way too. I had a nice old Pioneer receiver my uncle gave me and I hooked up like 6 speakers to it in my garage. Thought I was being smart, really cranking the tunes. That thing lasted maybe 3 months before it just gave up and started smelling like burnt plastic. I was so pissed. Then a buddy who builds his own amps explained the whole impedance thing to me like I was 5 years old. It finally clicked. Now I just run a simple 2 speaker setup with a sub and it sounds way better and nothing catches fire. You really do pay for that lesson in blown gear.

I had 8 speakers running off a 90s Sony receiver for years with zero issues though lol.
