I finally get why the guy at the Grand Rapids estate sale told me to skip the soundbar
About 6 months ago I was digging through a pile of old A/V gear at an estate sale over on Wealthy St in Grand Rapids, and this older guy named Walt who ran the sale stopped me. I was holding a soundbar and he just looked at me and said "those things are for people who gave up." At the time I kind of brushed it off, but he walked me over to a corner where he had two old bookshelf speakers and a beat up receiver for $40 total. I asked him why he'd sell me the better setup for less money and he told me he ran a stereo shop downtown for 22 years before everything went cheap and small. I took the speakers home, hooked them up in my basement setup, and the difference was not even close. Dialogue was clear for the first time in my little 10 by 12 room. Now I'm wondering what else he was right about. Has anyone else had a random stranger at a sale or store push them toward the older, cheaper gear that actually worked better?
