Great week turned nightmare when my budget projector died mid-movie
Last Friday I finally got my 1080p setup dialed in, total cost around $340 with a used screen from Craigslist. Invited six buddies over for the Alien marathon. Twenty minutes into the second film the lamp just gave out, no warning. Turns out the previous owner reset the lamp counter, the bulb was already at 2,100 hours. Anyone else get burned buying a used projector with a hidden lamp issue?
Ugh, that's brutal! I had the same thing happen with a used Epson, except the bulb died after like three weeks. What worked for me was hitting up the seller about it, and since they had posted the ad as "working great", they actually refunded me half the cost. Otherwise, I learned to always ask for the lamp hour reading from the menu before buying, not just the counter on the box, and to budget for a replacement bulb right off the bat. It's a pain, but at least you know the rest of the projector is solid if it ran that long.
