Appreciation post: I thought a projector in a bright room was a lost cause until I hung a $9 bedsheet from Goodwill
For the last year I ran a cheap 1080p projector on a white wall in my living room and just accepted that daytime movies looked washed out and gray. A guy at the flea market in Tucson sold me a king size bedsheet for $9 and said to hang it up instead of painting the wall, and I figured it was a waste of a Saturday. What really did it was the color, because that grayish sheet killed the light bouncing back from my lamp and the blacks finally looked like blacks instead of fog. I hung it on a shower rod across the window wall with binder clips, maybe 20 minutes of work, and the same disc looked like a different machine that night. My wife walked in during the opening of Jurassic Park and just stood there, then asked why we waited so long. The trade off is it wrinkles if I leave it clipped too tight, so now I steam it every couple of weeks. Has anyone tried a dark gray curtain panel instead, or does the sheet thing fall apart once you go bigger than 100 inches?

Ha, I am the last person who should give advice here because my first attempt at a screen was a fitted sheet still on the bed, and I sat there wondering why the movie had a weird lump in the middle during every dark scene. My wife still brings that up at dinner parties. What you found makes sense though, the gray kills the light coming back at the screen from lamps and walls, so the dark parts stop looking like fog. I run a dark gray curtain panel now at about 110 inches and it holds up fine, the only thing is you want something with a little weight so it hangs flat instead of curling at the edges. Steam is the real hero of this whole setup, wrinkles show up way more than people expect once the picture gets big.
