Vent: I called dodge roll spam a cheap crutch for 3 years and then Sekiro humbled me
For the longest time I lumped any game with i-frames into the same bucket as broken hitboxes and lazy combat design. I had this whole rant ready about how dodging through attacks is a band aid for bad collision, mostly because I got wrecked by a boss in Dark Souls 2 back in 2019 and never let it go. Then last month a buddy handed me Sekiro and told me to quit hiding behind a shield, and my first 6 hours were pure misery with 41 deaths tallied on the counter. The thing that flipped it for me was realizing the deflect window is tight but honest, meaning when I ate a hit it was my timing, not the game cheating me. I went back and replayed that old boss and cleared it in 2 tries, which honestly stung a little. So now I'm wondering if anyone else had a mechanic they trashed for years before one game finally made it click, and what game did it?
