Rant: the game said my save file was fine, then ate 40 hours anyway

Last week I booted up my current playthrough and the loading screen said "save data verified," all good. But when I got to the main hub, every quest NPC was missing and the map reset to the starting area. I checked the save file details and it claimed 40 hours, but the in-game clock said 2 minutes. Turns out the autosave had been overwriting my manual saves for the last 3 weeks and I never noticed until it was too late. Has anyone else had a game silently corrupt saves like that without any warning flag, or is this just my luck?

Turning off autosave and keeping three rotating manual saves fixed that exact problem for me.
