Rant: Lost 6 hours of progress in Hollow Knight because of one bench bug, and I can't decide if I should be mad at the game or myself
Last Saturday I finally beat the Mantis Lords after like 15 tries, then the game froze during the victory screen and when I reloaded I was back before the whole fight. So now I'm stuck asking myself the real question: is it on the devs for shipping a save bug that's been reported since launch, or on me for not quitting to the menu and backing up my save like a paranoid person? I get that indie games have limits, but a bug that eats hours of progress in a $15 game people have poured love into feels different than some random crash. How do you all decide when a glitch is unforgivable versus just part of the deal with smaller studios?
My buddy lost a 40 hour Skyrim save back in 2012 when a storm knocked his power out mid autosave, and he still brings it up at every cookout like it happened yesterday. The thing is, he never blamed Bethesda, he blamed himself for not keeping backups. So I get the urge to split the blame, but a crash on the victory screen is different from a power outage, that is the game failing at the exact moment it should be rewarding you. Six hours of benches and Mantis Lords attempts is a real loss, no matter whose fault it is.
