Over 300 hours in and I just learned stealth kills don't work if enemies spot your shadow first

I was doing that vault mission near the water tower in the eastern district, and this guard kept turning around before I even got close. Turns out the stupid sunlight was throwing my character's shadow right onto the wall in front of me. Has anyone else had their cover blown by a dumb environmental detail like that?
