Switched to a thinner mortar line and it fixed my leaning garden wall

I built a small retaining wall in my backyard last summer and after a few months it started leaning forward. I figured I messed up the foundation or drainage. After talking to an old mason at a supply yard in Columbus, he told me my mortar joints were too thick. He said try 3/8 inch instead of 1/2 inch. I was skeptical but I tore it down and rebuilt it with the thinner joints. It's been 6 months now and that wall is dead straight. Has anyone else had issues with joint thickness messing up their alignment?

Small stuff like that always adds up to bigger problems before you even notice it happening.

Is it really that big of a deal though or are we just overthinking little things...
