Rant: Hauling away reusable bricks because the specs demand new
The architect's plans called for virgin materials, no exceptions. It kills me to see perfectly good brick end up in a landfill.

Building codes usually require new bricks for safety. Old bricks might have hidden problems that could cause trouble later. While @parkertorres mentioned electronics, bricks in walls need to be reliable, so maybe it's not so bad.
