PSA: stop buttering the bed joint on CMU block, it's costing you time and mortar

I used to slop mortar across the whole bed joint on every block until an old mason in Tulsa showed me he only spreads it on the face shells and webs, said he saves about a bag of mortar per 100 blocks that way. Turns out the middle of the joint squishes out anyway and just makes a mess on the wall. Anyone here still buttering the full bed or did you switch over too?
