PSA: Dropped $180 on a mortar hawk with a soft grip and my wrist quit hurting after two days
I been laying block for 14 years and my wrist was killing me every night, so I finally caved and spent $180 on a soft grip hawk at the supply yard off Route 9. First day I figured I got robbed, felt the same as my old $25 one. By day two the ache in my forearm just wasn't there anymore, and I knocked out a 12 course wall without stopping to shake my hand out. The rubber grip spreads the weight different and I didn't realize how hard I was squeezing that metal handle. Anybody else find a small tool upgrade that fixed a nagging pain, or am I just getting old?
How wide is the handle on the new one compared to your old hawk? I ask because I swapped my trowel for one with a bigger handle and it fixed my grip problems overnight. The metal shaft on my old one was so thin I was basically crushing it all day without knowing. If the soft grip is wider, that alone might be doing more than the rubber. Wondering if I need the same fix on my hawk or if it's just the size that matters.
